SALT LAKE CITY — A discount for riders purchasing Utah Transit Authority bus and rail tickets using the FAREPAY card that was set to expire at the end of 2016 may be extended through 2017.

UTA announced Wednesday they  have proposed extending the FAREPAY promotional rates, which save riders 40 percent on bus fare and 20 percent on rail fare, through the end of 2017.

The recommendation is part of a tentative budget for 2017 that was approved by the UTA Board of Trustees Wednesday and will be finalized in December after a public comment period concludes.

“FAREPAY is becoming more popular with our customers, increasing the ease and convenience of riding our buses and trains,” stated UTA President and CEO Jerry Benson in a press release. “We expect this extension to help while transitioning more of our riders to electronic fare media. UTA hasn’t had a fare increase in several years now and we are glad to be able to continue this promotion while maintaining a fiscally responsible operating budget.”

Riders can purchase reusable FAREPAY cards and pre-load them with any amount between $5 and $500. The card is then used to tap for payments at the electronic card readers in UTA system.

According to UTA, the FAREPAY card is available online, at UTA Customer Service locations and through nearly 400 local retailers. The card involves a one-time fee of $3, and after a rider sets up an account the card can be reloaded online from a bank account or using a credit/debit card.
