SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake City Council made up to $21 million available for affordable housing opportunities to benefit the area's homeless population and other low-income Utahns.

Lisa Adams, The chair of the Redevelopment Agency, said the board had been looking into how to help lower-income families who cannot afford housing for years.

"The discussion about homelessness is on a parallel track with housing: that people who are homeless by definition do not have a home, and we want to put them in homes, and we felt like this was the ideal time to discuss it," Adams said.

Adams said the problem the city has faced in the past has been finding a builder.

"We are looking at everything from vouchers to incentives for developers to actually purchasing land and keeping it in perpetuity for affordable purposes," she said.

The city also allocated another $11.5 million to the four smaller shelters the city has decided to build.
