PLAIN CITY, Utah –Dispatch officials in Weber County received three or four 911 calls Tuesday about a man dressed as a clown and carrying a machete, and officers responded to find a man who said it was all meant as a prank.

Sgt. Matt Jensen of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office said several residents called to say they had seen a man dressed as a clown and holding a machete near Plain City Elementary School Tuesday evening.

Deputies responded to the scene and encountered an 18-year-old man dressed as a clown and carrying a plastic weapon. The man told deputies he was trying to play a prank on some friends. Jensen said after deputies responded, the man realized the prank was a bad decision.

The suspect, who police have not identified, was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.

The citation is one of several disciplinary actions to occur in Utah in recent weeks as clown sightings have swept the nation. In all of the Utah cases, the culprits proved to be teenagers or young adults trying to prank friends.
