SALT LAKE CITY — A new poll has independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin ahead of Hillary Clinton in Utah, and only one point below Donald Trump.

The HeatStreet/Rasmussen poll released Monday showed McMullin polling at 29 percent, just below Trump’s 30 percent and head of Clinton at 28 percent.

The poll is the latest to show an extremely close race in Utah between Trump, Clinton and McMullin. It is the latest example of how Utah, once a reliable red state, has become a “toss up” in the election. Trump has polled lower than Republicans ever have in the state.

“Should McMullin win the state of Utah, he would be the first independent since 1968 to take electoral college votes.  McMullin and his running mate Mindy Finn have gathered the attention of the national media since they began to make polling strides in Utah,” HeatStreet reported.

McMullin seized on it immediately.

McMullin, a former CIA operative and Brigham Young University graduate, has been campaigning heavily in Utah and parts of Idaho.
