SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake County Republican Party announced late Thursday night the censure of Chief Deputy Recorder Julie Dole.

In a rare and pointed public condemnation, the organization claimed Dole has deliberately hidden the health problems and mental state of County Recorder Gary Ott. The censure also accuses Dole of manipulating her boss.

The Salt Lake County GOP’s decision to censure Dole came after reports about the Salt Lake County Council’s concerns about Ott. Council members said Ott had trouble answering basic questions at a meeting.

“It has become clear to us that Ms. Dole has been being dishonest in hiding the health status of County Recorder Gary O‚tt. The Republican Party has been disaffected by Ms. Dole’s repeated att‚empts to mislead the public”, wrote Suzanne Mulet, Chair of the Salt Lake County GOP, in a news release. “Further, her behavior not only affects the public, but has irreparably tarnished the legacy of Gary O‚tt’s many years of effective and admirable public service.”

Ott, who earns about $150,000 a year in salary and benefits, was elected in 2014 to serve a six-year term. There isn’t a state statute that would allow the city council to remove him from office and there hasn’t been any indication that he might resign.
