ROY, Utah -- Roy Police are investigating the homicide of a 22-month-old girl.
Officers thought they were responding to a medical emergency Wednesday morning at a home in the area of 5000 South and 3100 West. The call indicated a child was unconscious, and when police arrived they knew it was much more serious.
The toddler had numerous injuries on her body that indicated child abuse. She was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City where she died the next day.
"I can't even imagine something happening like that, and how it could happen to a child, especially a 22-month-old," said neighbor Kayle Russell, who has a two-year-old of her own.
"I've been bawling ever since I heard about it, it's just really sad," said Susan Mickles, another neighbor and mother.
Police have questioned several people in the case, but so far no arrests have been made.
"Very much concerned about trauma that happens to my friends and neighbors, especially if it involves a child," said neighbor Howard Lincoln.
Fox 13 spoke with the owner of the home off camera. He said a woman and her two children had been staying with him. He wouldn't go into any further detail.
"He was very, very personable and so it shocks me a little bit that something like that would happen in his home," Lincoln said.
Parents who live in the neighborhood said they will be hugging their own kids a little tighter.
"I look at him cause he's just barely two and to think that this little girl was about his size; it just breaks my heart," Russell said.
