SALT LAKE CITY — 500 South is closed in downtown Salt Lake City as hazmat crews work to control an ammonia gas leak at a meat packing plant Sunday afternoon.

Salt Lake City fire responded to the Palace Meat Company at about noon on reports of the smell of the gas. When crews arrived on scene, they closed 500 South between 700-800 East.

Fire officials stated around 3:30 p.m. that ammonia levels inside the structure remained well above dangerous levels, and 500 South remained closed in the area. The dangerous levels are only within the structure and not impacting the surrounding area, the fire department stated.

No evacuations have been ordered as this time. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
