HERRIMAN, Utah - Unified Police Department officers are investigating a case as a criminal homicide after a man was found dead in Butterfield Canyon Wednesday.

Police identified the deceased Thursday as 26-year-old Alejandro Reyes of West Jordan, Utah.

Authorities said Reyes' body was found wrapped in plastic about 4 miles up Butterfield Canyon Wednesday afternoon by someone who was hiking or hunting in the area.

"A bypasser located some type of bundle, package, that was in plastic," Lt. Brian Lohrke of the Unified Police Department said.

The body was taken to a medical examiner and was identified Thursday. Police said Reyes was last seen by family members on October 1, and he was reported missing October 5.

toyota-tacomaA truck belonging to Reyes has not yet been located. Police are looking for a red, two-door 2002 Toyota Tacoma with Utah license plate # W238EA. Police said the case is being investigated as a criminal homicide, and anyone with information about the death is asked to call UPD at 801-743-7000.

Investigators are waiting on autopsy results to determine how Reyes died. Police are also investigating the area near where the body was found.

"Obviously with the weather that we've had lately, it's going to make it quite difficult," Lohrke said of that investigation.
