SALT LAKE CITY — Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign has launched “Mormons for Hillary” in an effort to woo people in red-state Utah to vote for her.
The coalition of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will try to appeal to fellow Mormons about why Clinton is a better choice for them than Republican nominee Donald Trump. In statements put out by the Clinton campaign from “Mormons for Hillary” members, they cite Trump’s policies on immigration and comments on religions as reasons.
“Growing up I used to get teased and picked on for being ‘a Mormon.’ Nobody should be ridiculed for their religious beliefs in our country. When I hear Mr. Trump discuss building a wall and excluding people based off of religious bigotry, it concerns me deeply as an American, and a member of the LDS faith,” Richard Bennett said in an email put out by Clinton’s campaign.
The list of “Mormons for Hillary” members include House Minority Leader Brian King, developer Kem Gardner and Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams.
Recent polls have shown Trump with lower than typical support in Republican-dominated Utah, but still ahead of Clinton in the presidential race.
