Gracie Hinds is a beautiful 14-year-old girl who suffers from a life threatening autoimmune disorder. Gracie was previously healthy up until the age of 9. A month after her 9th birthday Gracie became sick with a virus and her immune system attacked her brain, instead of the virus, causing her to go into a status of constant seizing. Gracie was placed in a medically induced coma and spent 3 months in that coma in the ICU at Primary Children`s Hospital. It was decided that the best chance for her survival was to completely kill her immune system, in order for it to stop the attack on her brain. After her 3 month coma Gracie spent an additional 3 months in the NTU at Primary Children`s Hospital relearning to walk, talk, eat, and live. Her recovery has been extremely tough. The damage to her brain has left her with physical and mental disabilities and every day continues to be a struggle. Gracie has no short term memory and suffers from seizures regularly. Gracie's immune system has never recovered and currently, her body has no immune system of its own. Gracie requires weekly infusions to build up her immune system enough for her to attend school and live a normal, active life. At this point, her doctors feel that she could require these infusions for the rest of her life and without them, something as simple as a common cold could be life threatening. Despite the fact that The Hinds Family has insurance the weekly infusions cost $348.00 a month out of pocket. Gracie already requires over $300.00 a month of additional medications that she takes 3 times a day through a G-tube in her stomach. Gracie's condition is extremely rare and much is unknown about her future. Every day is a gift and a battle.
