COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah -  Canyon School District officials are alerting parents to a man seen exposing himself to children outside schools in Cottonwood Heights.

Authorities say two incidents of an individual flashing occurred last week around Butler Elementary and Butler Middle Schools. The district sent a memo to parents wanting them to be aware of the situation.

The school district said it has been working with the Cottonwood Heights Police Department.

Authorities want parents to encourage children to run into school if they see anything suspicious and that the school is the safest place for them outside of their home.

Jeff Haney, spokesman for Canyon School District, said they are actively answering questions for parents who call in.

“The reports that we are hearing, they’re serious and we take them serious and we want to make sure that everyone in the community is aware that we are working with police and we are actively participating in providing safe passage to schools for our students,” said Haney.

Below is the letter the district emailed to parents/guardians:

Dear Parents,

Canyons District and the Administration at Quail Hollow Elementary want parents to be aware that Cottonwood Heights Police have been notified of at least two reports of a man who is allegedly exposing himself to children as they walk on the sidewalks of the neighborhood near our school. To the end of ensuring the safety of our community, we have requested heightened police presence in the mornings as our students walk to school and in the afternoon after the last bell signals the end of classes. Please let your children know the school is safe haven for them if they happen to witness such criminal behavior. Ask them to report the incident as soon as they can. The Front Office is a place student can go to make the report and get any help they may need to feel secure. We also ask parents be on alert for any suspicious behavior. We appreciate your attention to this serious safety issue for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the school at 801-826-9175 or send an e-mail message to communications@canyonsdistrict.org.

Thank you.
