Salt Lake City- Fall is almost here, but gardening season is far from over. Wendy Brown with the Salt Lake Gardening Association says that there are a number of plants you can be putting in the ground now. Generally the first frost along the Wasatch Front is mid to late October with high elevations starting in September. USU Extension has a list of when the first frost hits your area on their web sitehere.

Now it is a little late to be planting  peas or lettuce for a fall harvest, but Brown says but some of vegetables like garlic and onions that can winter in the ground are great to be planting in September. She reminds us that having good compost mixed in the soil to give your plants a little extra push to get them though the winter. She also recommends adding bone meal in the gourd when planting bulbs to give it some extra calcium.
