TOOELE COUNTY, Utah – Several roads remain closed as crews continue to battle a wildfire in Tooele County that has raged to 4,006 acres since it was sparked Friday.
The West Government Creek Fire, started by a lightning strike, is burning about 10 miles southwest from Vernon in the Uinta Wasatch-Cache National Forest and is currently at zero-percent containment.
Highway 36 to Pony Express Road, Lookout Pass Road and Erickson Pass Road are closed due to the blaze, according to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service.
A Red Flag Warning is in place from noon until 10 p.m. today.
“A windy air mass will remain over the fire throughout the day with wind reaching 10-15 mph and potential gusts reaching the upper 30s,” the release states.
On Saturday, authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for campers in the area. That order was lifted around 6 p.m.
About 200 personnel are on scene with BLM, Forest Service and other county resources responding to the blaze.
There are three hotshot crews, two hand crews, one squad, five engines, four water tenders, three heavy air tankers, three single-engine tankers and three helicopters.
