Surveillance footage released of SLC shooting, car crash scene

SALT LAKE CITY -- Authorities released surveillance footage, Tuesday, in an effort to track down handguns stolen from a fatal shooting scene in Salt Lake City Sunday morning.

Just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday, police were called to 300 S. 550 West to a shots fired and report of a hit-and-run car crash. During the investigation, officers learned the two incidents were connected, calling it a “drug deal gone bad.”

When officers arrived, they found Jesse Ray Rakes, 30, on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the hip. He later died at an area hospital. Officers arrested Matthew Eyre, Michael Polk, Daniel Christopher Simon Jr. and Natanni Xoumphonphackdy in connection to the incident.

Video in the area shows several people run down the street toward a vehicle upside down in the road. Witnesses told authorities they saw 15 to 30 people raid the wrecked car, taking items of evidentiary value from the car and off the victim, according to Salt Lake City police.

Among items taken were two to three handguns that authorities say are involved in the investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of these missing handguns is asked to call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.
