SALT LAKE CITY — Mayor Jackie Biskupski married her fiancée over the weekend.

Biskupski married Betty Iverson in a private ceremony on Sunday, according to a post on the mayor’s Facebook page.

“Yesterday our family was brought together by marriage. We have always been bonded by love, but now we are joined by law,” Biskupski wrote. “As our dear friend Kate Kendell highlighted while performing the ceremony, our family and all families like ours have come so far to make joyous days like this possible. We truly are stronger together. ‪#‎love‬

Biskupski, who is the second woman and first openly gay mayor of Utah’s capital city, became engaged to Iverson shortly after her election in November. Iverson, a spokesman for the mayor said at the time, works as director of state government affairs for Johnson & Johnson.

The ceremony was performed by Kate Kendell, the executive director of the San Francisco-based National Center for Lesbian Rights, who also represented same-sex couples who sued Utah for the right to marry.
