SALT LAKE CITY — The creator of the Disney Channel show “Lizzie McGuire” is helming a new television series that will begin filming in Utah this September ahead of the show’s anticipated 2017 debut.

According to a press release from the Utah Film Commission, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board approved a state film incentive Thursday for the new project, “Andi Mack.”

The show stars 12-year-old Peyton Elizabeth Lee in the lead role, and the single-camera family series follows Andi as she prepares to celebrate her 13th birthday. However, when her “capricious older sister Bex returns home with the hope of getting her life together, Andi’s life is turned upside down and she is left questioning everything she’s ever known.”

Terri Minsky, who created the popular show “Lizzie McGuire”, is heading up the series, which is targeted at children and families.

The show is expected to hire about 253 local cast and crew, and it is anticipated Disney will spend an estimated $9,589,213 in Utah. According to the press release, The Walt Disney Company has spent about $129 million in Utah over the last two decades on 32 projects, including titles like “The Lone Ranger” and the “High School Musical” films.

“Disney Channel has been a fantastic partner over the years,” stated Virginia Pearce, director of the Utah Film Commission, in the release.  “We are thrilled to have them back in Utah, particularly with a production of this caliber. This television series brings lasting jobs, a use of our great locations, and, most importantly, quality content that fits so well in Utah.”

The GOED Board also approved another film incentive Thursday for the independently produced “Snatchers”, which is billed as a sci-fi comedy. The digital series is expected to hire about 72 cast and crew and spend an estimated $730,839 in Utah.
