SALT LAKE CITY — A University of Utah football player has been charged with criminal mischief after allegedly damaging a patrol vehicle and patrol room window on campus.

Cory Butler-Byrd, a senior receiver, was suspended from the team as of Aug. 4.

“Cory is dealing with personal issues and has been suspended from our team indefinitely,” said Coach Kyle Whittingham.

According to court documents released Tuesday, officers responded to the Southside Patrol Room 301, 1735 E. South Campus Drive, after hearing a loud pop and the sound of glass shattering.

When they arrived on scene, officers made contact with a man, later identified as 21-year-old Butler-Byrd, who was preparing to throw a large white sign, court documents indicate. At that point, the Ute was placed into custody.

Post-Miranda, Butler stated he threw a piece of wood at the building, which caused the window to break, court documents state.

After the incident was resolved, one of the responding officers discovered his patrol vehicle’s rear windshield had been smashed in and there was a large dent on the roof of the car.

Video footage showed a suspect standing on the officer’s vehicle and “jumping up and down,” according to court documents.

Footage shows the suspect then went to Southside Patrol Room 301 at the same time Butler-Byrd broke the glass on the patrol room window.

Court documents go on to state that Butler-Byrd came to the station on his own accord to talk about what happened.

After being told he was free to leave, Butler-Byrd admitted to damaging the patrol vehicle and breaking the patrol room window, according to court documents.

The damage is estimated to be more than $500.

Butler-Byrd is scheduled for an arraignment on Sept. 13.

Utah Athletics officials said Butler-Byrd remains on scholarship but will not be participating in team activities during his suspension.
