SALT LAKE CITY — A mother is facing charges of child abuse after police in Salt Lake City came upon a 10-year-old girl at a service station who was bleeding and had a swollen face.

Officers encountered the young girl near 500 South Redwood Road Tuesday, and she had a swollen face from her ear to the bottom of her jaw and she was bleeding from an ear.

The girl also had marks and bruises on both legs and arms, and she told police her mother had recently beaten her with a belt and on a previous occasion she said she was hit with a cell phone charging cord.

She also told officers that her mother had wrapped a belt around her neck and repeatedly punched and slapped her while pulling on the belt.

Police observed injuries consistent with the girl’s reports of abuse, and she said her 5-year-old sister had also been beaten by her mother with a belt. Officers responded to a residence near 600 South and Redwood Road, where they took custody of the 5-year-old girl. She also reported abuse at the hands of her mother.

Post Miranda, Lucinda Escobar told police she had hit her children using a belt and earlier a cell phone charger cord. She also admitted to wrapping the belt around her daughter’s neck, according to police.

Police executed a search warrant on the home, where they found the belt used in the alleged abuse as well as drug paraphernalia left in the reach of children.

According to police, Escobar was booked into jail and faces several counts of child abuse.
