DRAPER, Utah — A unit within the Uinta Facility at the Utah State Prison was put on lock down after an inmate was stabbed about 30 times Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Utah Department of Corrections, several inmates attacked another inmate inside a cell at the Uinta Facility around 4 p.m.

Unified Police Department personnel said the inmate was stabbed about 30 times with a shank, which is a sort of makeshift knife. There were between four and five other inmates involved, and police said at this point the stabbing appears to be gang related.

The inmate was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

Unified Police Department personnel were handling the investigation, which is standard protocol, but Wednesday night they said they had concluded their investigation and were handing the case over to security personnel at the prison.

The Uinta Facility was expected to remain on lock down until the investigation was completed, but it was not immediately clear if the lock down had been lifted Wednesday night.
