KEARNS, Utah -- Authorities are investigating the scene of a shooting in Kearns after a man with apparent gunshot wounds was brought to a hospital and found to be dead on arrival early Sunday morning.

The deceased was later identified as 24-year-old Marvin Lopez of West Valley City.

Police say shots were fired from a gas station near 5500 South and 4200 West  around 3:15 a.m. About 45 minutes later, shots again rang out a short distance up the street. Police believe two different guns were used.

John Coulston lives nearby and heard the shots.

"I was sound asleep, and I heard: 'Pop pop,' brought me up," he said.

Coulston also said he heard a car racing by.

"According to witnesses, there was more than one that called 911, but according to witnesses, they saw a silver passenger car leave at a high rate of speed and then go east on 5400 South," said Lt. Lex Bell of the Unified Police Department.

Bell said those who brought Lopez to the hospital weren't very helpful regarding the police investigation.

"Whoever brought them in was very belligerent, not providing details," he said.

Police investigated, and at this point they believe it was during the second shooting that Lopez suffered fatal injuries. Neighbors told police the gunfire occurred in conjunction with a house party, and they said they initially thought the noises were fireworks.
