Officer fires shots at suspect in Hurricane

HURRICANE, Utah — Officers were called to a trespassing in progress in Hurricane Wednesday evening.

Police said two suspects had left the scene before officers arrived at about 7 p.m. While investigating the incident, officers found what they believed to be a stolen vehicle at the location of the trespassing.

One suspect was later found by police in a different vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect drove from police .

The suspect traveled from Hurricane to LaVerkin. Officers lost sight of the vehicle for some time until the suspect drove directly at one of the officers.

Police said they gave multiple commands to stop the vehicle before one of the officers fired shots at the suspect. A total of seven shots were fired, five of which struck the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect ran from the scene and was combative with officers once stopped at 70 North 70 East, LaVerkin.

Authorities said the suspect was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center for minor scrapes and bruises he suffered as a result of running through a barbed wire fence.

Hurricane Police SGT. Buell told FOX 13 that the officer who fired shots was also taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police are still searching for the second suspect.

The Washington County Critical Incident Task Force has been called to conduct an investigation while the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave.
