PLEASANT GROVE, Utah — The U.S. Postal Service is investigating and an employee is no longer working with the department after allegations surfaced that pieces of mail were trashed rather than delivered in Pleasant Grove.

According to a press release from USPS, Special Agents from the USPS Office of the Inspector General responded June 10 to allegations that mail had been disposed of in Eagle Mountain.

During the investigation, agents identified a person of interest. The release states, “That individual is no longer employed by the U.S. Postal Service.”

The press release states that privacy policies prevent the Postal Service from identifying the employee in question.

Investigators also located discarded pieces of mix-classed mail. The mail was recovered and returned to the intended recipients.

A report regarding the investigation’s findings was sent to the U.S. Attorney’s Office June 13 for their review and consideration.

The press release states the case may be a violation of Title 18 U.S.C. 1701: “Whoever knowingly and willfully obstructs or retards the passage of the mail, or any carrier or conveyance carrying the mail, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.”

Anyone with information about the discarded mail is encouraged to contact the Office of the Inspector General at 1-888-USPS-OIG.

The release further states:

“The Postal Service employs more than 522,000 employees and is the largest civilian federal workforce in the country. This type of behavior within the Postal Service is not tolerated and is a rare occurrence. It is important for the public we serve to know the overwhelming majority of Postal Service employees are honest, hardworking, and trustworthy individuals who would never consider engaging in any type of criminal behavior.”
