HOWELL, Utah – A 7-year-old boy has died and others are injured after a rollover crash in Box Elder County.

Officials said grandparents were driving their two grandchildren from Texas to Washington State on I-84 near Howell.

The Utah Highway Patrol said at about 5:30 a.m. the family’s pickup truck rolled.

Witnesses report the 7-year-old boy was out of the vehicle and walking around after the crash, and he flagged down other vehicles for help. After two semi drivers pulled over, but before EMS arrived, the boy suffered a seizure and quit breathing.

Efforts to revive him were not successful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was later identified as Joey Garza of San Juan, Texas.

The grandmother, 65-year-old Valerie Garza of Edcounch, Texas, was flown to the hospital in critical condition with injuries to her head.

The girl and grandfather also went to the hospital.

Troopers said drowsiness may have been a factor in the accident, as the group had left Texas Wednesday morning to drive to Washington.

The names of the family have not been released.
