LAS VEGAS — Deshauna Barber of the District of Columbia will represent her country at the Miss Universe pageant after she was crowned Miss USA Sunday night in Las Vegas.

The Miss USA 2016 pageant was held in Las Vegas, and 26-year-old Barber, who is an active member of the U.S. Army, took home the crown.

Steve Harvey got a lot of attention on Twitter for pointing out that his gaffe at Miss Universe in 2015 was just a matter of him being a few months and a handful of words off the mark. Harvey had incorrectly declared Miss Colombia the winner of Miss Universe instead of Miss Philippines.

Barber was born in Columbus, Georgia, but relocated several times due to her father’s service in the military. According to Miss Universe.com, she holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Management from Virginia State University.

Barber is currently serving as a Logistics Commander for the 98th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland. Her platform focuses on PTSD treatment for soldiers and suicide prevention efforts among those in the armed forces.
