BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah — A man was hit and killed by a car in Box Elder County along Interstate 15 while checking for damage after his vehicle went off the roadway , Wednesday afternoon.

At 1:40 p.m., Allen W. Devaul, 50, of South Jordan, was  traveling south in a 2006 white Toyota Sienna,  with his wife and sister-in-law when they lost control and slid off the road at mile marker 398 into the median due to heavy rain in the area, said Sgt. Todd Royce, spokesman with Utah Highway Patrol.

The husband got out of the van and was to take photos of possible damage. At about 1:45 p.m., a motorist traveling in a silver 2012 Toyota Corolla, passing the area, also lost control and hit the husband, Royce said. He was killed instantly.

The occupants of the Corolla were not injured but their vehicle was towed from the scene.

The Sienna suffered no damage and was released to the victim’s wife.

The inside lane on southbound I-15 was closed but reopened at 3:30 p.m.

It was first reported that the third occupant in the victim’s car was a child. It was later found out to be a sister to the other occupant in the van.
