HERRIMAN, Utah -- Two weeks ago, the Unified Police Department lost a valued member of their team as Aldo the K-9 was killed in the line of duty.

Saturday, the department held a memorial service with the community to honor Aldo's service. Supporters gathered at Herriman High School.

The officers held a ceremony and procession for Aldo, and they said the service is part of the healing process as they remember Aldo’s sacrifice.

“While a K-9 service animal doesn't equate necessarily to a human being, he certainly is a member of our family and will be given the honors due,” Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder said.

Aldo was killed by 36-year-old David Anderson during a standoff with police. Anderson also died after the shooting. Detectives are still investigating whether his gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Unified PD posted a tribute video to Aldo on their Facebook, see below for that footage.
