(CNN) — Two victims in a series of stabbings in Taunton, Massachusetts, have died, as well as the suspect, authorities said Tuesday night.

The suspect’s motive remains under investigation but there is no connection to terrorism, Dave Procopio, director of media communications for Massachusetts State Police, said Tuesday night.

At least two of the stabbings occurred at the Silver City Galleria Mall after the assailant crashed a motor vehicle into the front of a store, Procopio said. The other two stabbings appear to have been committed at a residence. It’s not known which location was the site of the fatal stabbings.

An off-duty law enforcement officer shot the assailant at the mall, authorities said.

The victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

The assailant may have been involved in an earlier motor vehicle crash at the residence before the stabbings, Procopio said.

A federal law enforcement source in Boston said the incident is being treated as a “criminal matter.”

The FBI is aware of the situation and coordinating with state and local police, said Kristen Setera, spokeswoman for the Boston FBI field office.
