PAYSON, Utah — A 16-year-old girl is dead, a 16-year-old boy is in critical condition, and three others suffered minor injury after a crash in Payson Saturday night.

Lt. Bill Wright with the Payson Police Department said the crash occurred around 11 p.m. as two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions in the area of 1600 West Utah Avenue.

Wright said an eastbound vehicle appears to have taken a turn too fast, causing the car to turn sideways–where it was impacted by a westbound vehicle.

A passenger in the eastbound vehicle, 16-year-old Erica Montague of Payson, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The driver, a 16-year-old male from Salem, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

Lana Hiskey, a spokesperson for the Nebo School District, confirmed grief counselors would be available at Salem Hills High School Monday.

“We will have our Crisis counselor intervention team at Salem Hills High for all students and staff that will need help concerning this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this very difficult time.”

The three occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor injury and were taken to a hospital to be evaluated.

Wright said at this time they do not believe weather was a factor in the crash.
