SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Justice Department is asking a federal judge to disband the police force in the polygamous border towns of Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz.

It’s the federal government’s recommendation after a jury trial found the town governments discriminated against non-members of the Fundamentalist LDS Church and acted as an arm of the sect and its leader, Warren Jeffs. In a court filing on Friday, the U.S. Justice Department also asked for property to be subdivided and independent oversight of the town governments.

Hildale and Colorado City are expected to respond to the recommendations ahead of an October hearing in Phoenix. The towns previously agreed to a financial settlement in the case.
