Symptoms and Treatment of Gastric Cancer

Gastric cancer is cancer that starts in the stomach. About 90% to 95% of gastric cancers are adenocarcinomas, which are cancers that develop from the cells that form the mucosa, or innermost, lining of the stomach. Unfortunately, because stomach cancers tend to grow slowly over many years, early stages tend to go undetected. However, there are some signs and symptoms to keep an eye on.

Symptoms of gastric cancer

- Decreased appetite

- Unintentional weight loss

- Abdominal pain or discomfort

- Fullness in the upper abdomen

- Heartburn or indigestion

- Nausea- Vomiting (sometimes with blood)

- Fluid build-up in abdomen

- Low red blood cell count

Treatment options for gastric cancer

If you are diagnosed with gastric cancer, your treatment plan will be based on the location and stage of the disease. Your cancer care team will help you understand your diagnosis and what steps should be taken.

- Surgery

- Chemotherapy

- Targeted therapy

- Radiation therapy

In most cases, two or more of these treatment methods may be recommended.
