SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the appointment of several new leaders Saturday at their 186th Annual General Conference, including a new Primary General Presidency.

The Primary presidency oversees the teaching of children ages 18 months to 11-years-old within the LDS Church, and according to mormonnewsroom.org the goal is to help children live the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joy D. Jones was called to be the Primary General President, and the calling comes after several years of service with the LDS Church’s Primary general board. Jones was born and raised in Oregon, and she married her husband, Robert, while attending BYU. She has a degree in home and family sciences. She and Robert have five children and 13 grandchildren.

Jean B. Bingham was named the First Counselor in the Primary. Bingham also previously served with the Primary general board, and she also spent time with the Young Women’s program and Primary in her local ward. She was also previously a Seminary teacher. A native of Provo, Bingham has a master’s degree in education from BYU. She is married to Bruce Bingham, and the couple has two daughters.

Bonnie H. Cordon was named the Second Counselor in the Primary. She served with her husband, Derek, in the Brazil, Curitiba Mission from 2010 to 2013 while Derek Cordon was the mission president for that area. She was also a full-time missionary in Portugal from 1982-1983. Cordon is from Idaho Falls, Idaho and received a bachelor’s degree in education from BYU. She and her husband have four children.
