CEDAR CITY, Utah — A man was taken to a hospital in serious condition after he was stabbed numerous times Thursday night, and police have arrested a suspect and said they believe alcohol consumption contributed to the altercation.

According to information from the Cedar City Police Department, officers responded around 8:30 p.m. Thursday to the Value Inn regarding a fight.

An adult male had been stabbed multiple times, and the suspect had fled on foot. Officers identified that suspect as 34-year-old Scott Baney, and that man was located a short time later in a nearby parking lot and was taken into custody without incident.

Police investigating the alleged stabbing learned that two others were present during the altercation and attempted to stop the attack, suffering minor injury as a result. While the man who was stabbed was taken to a hospital in serious condition, the other two individuals did not require medical transport.

Police state: “The motive behind the stabbing is unknown at this time, but investigators believe that alcohol consumption contributed to the altercation. Baney was booked into the Iron County Correctional Facility on second degree felony aggravated assault.”
