The group of seven friends who died in Zion National Park in Keyhole Canyon loved outdoor adventures. Six of them lived in Southern California, and one, Don Teichner, lived in Mesquite, Nevada. Most of them were involved with a hiking group in Valencia, California.

The Ventura County Sheriff's department set up a small memorial outside the office of Steve Arthur, who served as the county's traffic sergeant. Next to a wreath of flowers, they had pictures of Steve and Linda Arthur on exotic vacations: snorkeling next to a giant fish, and hugging each other on a ridge overlooking the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru.

The Arthur's neighbor, Janene Wilcox, said she appreciated their presence.

"They'd tell you, 'You come over if you need anything.' And knowing that you have somebody like that on your side if you needed them, was so comforting." said Wilcox, adding, "This is horrible news."

Family members of five of the seven people who died Monday due to flash flooding at Zion National Park's Keyhole Canyon have issued the following statements:
