UTAH COUNTY — Search and rescue crews responded to the Stewart Falls area near Sundance Wednesday after a man fell an estimated 40 feet and suffered serious injuries to his head, back and leg.

Sgt. John Luke, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, said the 21-year-old male is from Canada but is attending school in Provo, and the victim and a female friend were hiking in the falls area when the man fell an estimated 40 feet.

A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene, but crews ultimately determined the man’s injuries did not require air transport so the man was instead taken by ground to an area hospital.

Luke said the man was in serious condition with injuries to his head, back and leg. Officials reported earlier the man was bleeding from his head but was conscious and alert when crews initially reached him.

The sequence of events leading to the fall were not immediately clear, though Luke said the pair of hikers were inexperienced.
