CEDAR CITY, Utah - Police are looking for a pair of suspects accused in an attempted armed robbery that happened Thursday night in Cedar City.

Officers received the call about 6:20 p.m. that shots had been fired in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Super Center. The victims told police they had been sitting in their car after shopping, when a man climbed in the back seat and pulled a gun.

“[The suspect] threatened them at the time,” said Sgt. Jerry Womack, Cedar City PD. “[He] attempted to rob them.”

Womack said one of the victims got out and called for help. That prompted the armed suspect to get out and enter another vehicle, which then drove away. Moments later, the suspects returned.

“Both vehicles were leaving the parking lot, and crossed paths, and there was a shot fired from the suspect vehicle into the victim’s vehicle,” Womack said.

Photos from St. George News show the scene.

Police are still looking for the suspect vehicle. They say it’s a 2000’s model silver Honda sedan with Nevada license plates. They’re hoping someone will spot it because of some distinguishing features. The rear bumper is missing, and the trunk is held down with a bungee cord.

While no one was injured in the encounter, it sparked an online debate Friday about the comparative safety of Cedar City. Some posting to social media claimed violence is on the rise, but other residents like Frank Lyle said the incidents are isolated.

“One of the most safest places I’ve lived, and I’ve been all over,” Lyle said. “I’m not worried about it. I’m not scared about it.”

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact Cedar City Police at 435-586-2956.
