STEVENSVILLE, Texas — Giving birth is a special time, but often you never know when its going to happen – and for one family in the Bitterroot Valley, their newest bundle of joy came when they least expected it.
Having a baby in a pickup truck, for the Jones family from Stevensville, Monday July 20, 2015 will be a day that they will never forget.
At 1 a.m., Martha Jones felt contractions, but at the time, she didn’t think much of it – oh how quickly things can change.
“My wife said, ‘I think I am going into labor, probably better get up.’ And about five minutes later, she came and laid back down, and said, ‘oh never mind, go back to sleep for a few more hours,'” dad Levi Jones said. 
“I didn’t really think it was serious labor at all. There was no pain. There was pressure and the contractions weren’t really consistent and it didn’t really seem like anything was going on,” mom Martha Jones said.
“Just as I was falling asleep she said, ‘my water broke, we better get going’,” Levi said.
“I could feel her when we were in the house. And I was like you know we should probably go so they took me out there and we’re sitting down and I was like, ‘Oh, we’re having a car baby,'” Martha said.
Everybody stayed calm and they gathered inside the pickup truck and made their way to the hospital.
But before they even reached Highway 93, Cheyenne Sierra Jones was born.
“We were on the road for maybe five to seven minutes and the baby started crowning and she was like, ‘The baby is there, the baby is coming out,’ I looked and sure enough,” Jessica Burhenn said, who ended up not only being an aunt but the backseat delivery nurse.
“The family had already kind of taken care of things and so the mom was doing fine and the baby was doing fine and honestly I didn’t have to do much,” Dr. David Laraway said, a gynecologist at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.
“Her and I were laughing and crying together,” Jessica said. “We were just so excited and it was a great feeling. I loved it.”
The baby’s name, Cheyenne Sierra, actually comes from the General Motors brand of pickup trucks, so it’s kind of fitting since she was born in a GMC.
