SALT LAKE CITY -- A man accused of stabbing two people near a Salt Lake City homeless shelter was arrested Sunday night.

According to a police watch log report, it started with an altercation outside The Road Home, near 200 S Rio Grande St around 9:30. Police said the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Jovonie Cabrera, stabbed a 20-year-old man in the stomach.

"They didn't know each other. I don't know what started the altercation, but something did and that's when [the victim] got stabbed," said Sgt. Robin Heiden, Salt Lake City Police Department.

Police said there were other people who witnessed the stabbing and they chased Cabrera as he attempted to flee.

"That's when the second victim was stabbed," Heiden said.

Police said Cabrera then fled in a black Chevy Impala occupied by a woman and two children.

Officers located the Impala at 400 S 1000 W. Cabrera was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated assault.

The two victims were hospitalized in serious condition.
