WASHINGTON TERRACE, Utah -- Members of a Utah organization gathered at a Washington Terrace park Saturday for sword fighting and other medieval activities.

Utah's Barony of Gryphon's Lair is a branch of The Society for Creative Anachronism, which is dedicated to researching and recreating the activities and culture of pre-17th century Europe. Members meet in medieval garb to recreate battle scenes, share authentic food, play music and engage in other activities of the Middle Ages.

"Basically, what we do is we recreate the Middle Ages as they should have been - without all the plague and, you know, dying and things of that nature," said Mark Steele, aka "Baron Dunkr Ormstunga," a member of the Barony of Gryphon's Lair.

Members of The Society for Creative Anachronism create their own medieval identities, make costumes and learn medieval skills - such as combat, Elizabethan dancing, axe-throwing and brewing - through active participation.

The Utah chapter meets every Wednesday in Sugar House.
