WEST JORDAN, Utah — A Utah man has been found guilty of murder and aggravated assault after he allegedly assaulted his roommate, then fled the scene and caused a fatal crash.
Bill Robert Thompson, 45, was found guilty of one count murder, a first-degree felony, and two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, in connection with the May 8, 2014 incidents.
Court documents state Thompson hit his roommate several times in the face with an open hand while the roommate was holding Thompson’s 3-year-old son. Neighbors who reported they tried to help the roommate said Thompson also assaulted them.
Police said they received a call about a domestic violence report, but Thompson left before police arrived. Court documents said Thompson then caused a minor crash on Pony Express Road in Draper, in which he struck the driver’s side door of a Mini Cooper, then laughed and drove away.
According to Draper police, witnesses stated that Thompson then ran a red light at the intersection of 12300 S and Lone Peak Parkway, killing 43-year-old Susan Madsen and critically injuring Madsen’s 13-year-old daughter Tessa.
A total of seven vehicles were involved in the crash and four other people also suffered injuries.
Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced on the afternoon of August 5.
