SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Governor Gary Herbert has nominated two people to serve on the state’s alcohol control authority.

In a statement to FOX 13 on Friday night, the governor’s office said S. Neal Berube, the CEO of Associated Food Stores and former Utah Dept. of Environmental Quality Director Amanda Smith will be appointed to the Utah Dept. of Alcoholic Beverage Control Commisssion.

“Neal and Amanda will be great assets to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission,” Gov. Herbert said in the statement. “The commission will greatly benefit from Neal’s expertise in retail management and Amanda’s legislative and agency experience.”

Smith, a Democrat, will be replacing Constance White on the DABC Commission. Berube, a Republican, will replace DABC Commission Chairman David Gladwell. Both White and Gladwell’s terms expire this month.

The nominations of Berube and Smith are subject to confirmation hearings by the Utah Senate. It is unknown if either Smith or Berube are drinkers, a frequent question asked by critics of the DABC Commission, which is charged with enforcing Utah’s liquor laws.

Currently, only three of the seven members of the DABC Commission are known drinkers.
