SALT LAKE CITY – Officials have confirmed they are now investigating a suspicious death as a homicide after a man’s body was found near the Jordan River.

Two hikers found the body of 36-year-old Anthony Paul Hernandez Monday afternoon near 804 N. Riverside Dr.

Salt Lake City police said his body was found in an area between the river and a trail that runs along the river.

Det. Greg Wilking said the body had suffered some sort of trauma but did not elaborate on the injury.

Officers found and interviewed a man wanted for questioning in Hernandez’s death Thursday, Christian Fuentes.Christian Fuentes mugshot

Police said Fuentes is a documented gang member who is known to frequent the area around Riverside Park and Rose Park.

Authorities did not say if questioning Fuentes led them to change the suspicious death to a homicide investigation.
