SALT LAKE CITY — Chilly, rainy weather didn’t stop thousands of people from showing up for the annual Susan G. Komen Utah Race for the Cure in Salt Lake City Saturday morning.

The 5K run is a fundraiser for the non-profit organization, which has a mission of ending breast cancer. About 9,000 people had signed up for the run this year, and, even though not everyone who signed up attended, the thousands who did come out didn’t seem to mind the weather.

Last year, more than 11,000 people participated in the race and helped raise more than $640,000.

Event organizers stated that up to 75 percent of the funds raised stay in Utah to help local breast health programs, and the remaining amount goes to global breast cancer research.

Jamie Brooks said she has been participating in the event for about 10 years and often ran with her friend Susan Brown. She said Brown passed away last year, but Brooks was out Saturday wearing the running shoes her friend gave her 10 years ago before her first race.

Brown said they love and miss Susan, and she said those who came out to the event were there to honor loved ones.

“Look at the crowd,” she said. “It’s raining, and it’s a sunny day because we’re all here for somebody that we love.”
