LOGAN, Utah — Utah State University announced Monday that junior quarterback Darell Garretson has left the football program.

“We thank Darell for his contributions to Utah State football the past two years and wish him the best in the future,” said head coach Matt Wells.

Garretson replaced starting quarterback Chuckie Keeton last season when he suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Garretson played five games as a sophomore before missing the rest of the season with a wrist injury.  His best game came against Brigham Young University when he led the Aggies to a 35-20 win in Provo.  He was 19-of-25 for 321 yards and three touchdown passes and one touchdown run.

Garretson also replaced Keeton in 2013 and started the final seven games with a 6-1 record.  He led the Aggies to the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division Championship and a win in the Poinsettia Bowl.  He set a USU freshman record for passing yards in a game with 370 against Hawai`i.

Garretson was the number one backup behind Keeton this spring.  Keeton received a medical hardship and was granted a fifth year of eligibility after suffering his second season-ending knee injury last season.

The Aggies will now have Damion Hobbs and DJ Nelson backing up Keeton.  Kent Myers finished last season as the Aggies quarterback and he led the Aggies to a win in the New Mexico Bowl.  He has been working with the wide receivers this spring.
