CLEARFIELD, Utah – Residents in Clearfield think a man and a woman suspected of theft are targeting homes that are for sale, and the pair allegedly carried out the crimes during the day and with young children along for the ride.

One victim said she had her carport cleaned out in broad daylight, and the alleged crimes occurred near 700 West 550 North around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Penny Thompson tells FOX 13 News she had a number of items, including toys, tools and garden equipment, in the carport when it was targeted by thieves. She said a neighbor called to tell her a man and woman were in the carport going through Thompson’s belongings.

The postal worker was on her delivery route but raced home only to find the thieves were gone, so she called police and went to return to work. That’s when she saw the alleged thieves, described as having been in a white Chevy Trailblazer, in the driveway of another home just a block away.

Thompson pulled into that driveway to block the suspect vehicle in, and she yelled at the suspects while on the phone with police. She said that’s when the male suspect confronted her.

"He leaned up against my door, and he's like, ‘Hey man, someone is like following us, so we're just like hanging out right here, everything is cool,’ and I'm like, ‘No you just went to my house and you just stole everything out of my house, or out of my carport, and we got witnesses and I've been called’” she said.

According to Thompson, the man and woman also had two young children with them--a boy who was about 10 years old and a girl who was about 7 years old. The woman took the bin of toys that had been stolen from Thompson out of the Trailblazer and placed it on the ground, then all four people got in the Trailblazer, drove over the yard and the curb and sped away.

Thompson chased them but was unable to catch them.

Both her home and the other one targeted are currently for sale. Thompson lives in the first while the second is vacant. Neighbors who spoke to FOX 13 News said they think the thieves targeted the two homes because both are for sale, but Clearfield police said, while that is a possibility, that isn’t something they are able to confirm.
