OREM, Utah -- The Utah Valley University and the Women Tech Council is hosting the second annual SheTech Explorer Day to encourage high school females to pursue careers in STEM subjects.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and some of the specific areas of study include aerodynamics, forensics, robotics and the chemistry of diamonds.

The goal is to give young women the chance to meet STEM role models and learn more about careers in those fields.

Angela Trego, chair and developer of SheTech, said: “It’s not so much about math as it is about, do they have curiosity? Are they creative? Do they like to solve problems? And it’s trying to show them that that’s what it’s about.”

According to a press release from UVU, the event sought to introduce about 1,000 girls in grades 9-12 to programs in STEM fields. The event featured displays set up by numerous technology companies as well as free workshops. Participants also had the chance to hear from Carine Clark, who is the president and CEO of MaritzCX. There was also a TechChallenge, complete with prizes.

Trego said there is a huge disparity between men and women employed by the tech industry. She hopes She Tech will help change that. For more information about SheTech, visit their website.
