PROVO, Utah – Tim Torkildson, a Utah blogger who made headlines last summer after he says he was fired over confusion between homophones/homosexuality, tried out a social experiment in Provo recently.

In a blog post titled “Giving Away Money In Provo, Utah” he wrote about the experience.

Torkildson said he posted up at Riverside Plaza with a stack of ten dollar bills with a sign that read: “PLEASE HELP ME GIVE AWAY $10.  THANKS!”

Torkildson wrote online:

“In two hours about 50 cars went by me; 45 of them did not look at me or acknowledge me in any way. The other five stopped, rolled down their windows and offered ME money. They couldn’t understand the sign or didn’t bother to read it, just assuming I was asking for money.”

He said he ended up giving those cars each $10 bringing his giveaway total to $50.

He said those five drivers left with smiles on their faces.

So what’s the takeaway here? It’s harder to give away cash than you’d think.
