SALT LAKE CITY --The fifth annual Utah FIRST Lego League State Championship was held Saturday at the University of Utah.

There are about 300 teams in the program, and 46 of them made it to the championship event. The kids have been working on their robots since September, and their creations were put through a series of timed events.

Ann Bastien, a program manager for Lassonde Institiute, described the judging process.

“These kids are not only building robots, both mechanically and programming them to accomplish challenges, but they are being judged in three judging sessions: project, which is their solution to the world-class challenge; core values, which is their teamwork; and then also their robot design."

The victors were Team Jedi from South Jordan, and they will advance to a competition being held in St. Louis in April.
