Man wanted for 6 counts of attempted murder named gang unit’s Public Enemy Number One

SALT LAKE CITY – The Unified Police Department’s Metro Gang Unit identified a man as their Public Enemy Number One Friday, and the man is wanted for alleged offenses that include six counts of attempted murder.

Police are searching for 19-year-old  Michael Steven Bonilla, who they said is a member of a violent street gang.

Bonilla has a $50,000 state warrant out for his arrest, and the warrant includes six counts of attempted murder and four counts of felony discharge of a firearm. The man has prior arrests for assault and drugs.

Bonilla is described as a man who stands 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and brown hair. The man has “801” tattooed on the back of his head. The suspect is pictured above.

Anyone who sees the man or who has information about him is asked to contact the Metro Gang Unit by calling UPD dispatch at 801-743-7000. Calls will remain anonymous.

According to a statement from the Unified Police Department: “The criteria for considering a candidate for Public Enemy Number One is as follows: The candidate is gang-related in some way. The candidate has outstanding arrest warrants or has been involved in serious offenses. The candidate has been deemed a serious and habitual threat to the community and it is considered only a matter of time before this person perpetrates additional crime in the community.”
