ANDALUSA, Ill. – A dog that fell through the ice at a water treatment plant was reportedly rescued after another dog took action to save the other canine’s life.

FOX 13 News sister station WQAD 8 reports that the dog helped by getting the attention of a worker at the plant.

“I’d left for lunch,” Joe Dungan told WQAD. “I came back, and when I came back from lunch the one black dog was running around and tried to get my attention. I looked over in this hole over here, and the other dog was in the water trying to get out, so I called 911.”

Dungan said the dog could be seen with its head just above the water in an unfrozen section of the large water treatment basin. He said the other animal seemed determined to get help.

“I think he was trying to tell me something, he was saving his friend, and I kept telling the dog that it would be alright, that we were getting help as quick as we could,” Dungan told WQAD.

Plant workers used ropes and a flat-bottomed boat to reach the dog and rescue it.

“It was worn out,” Matt Stark, who was on the boat, told WQAD. “He didn’t have much longer. It’s a good thing that we got to him when we did.”
