SALT LAKE CITY – A man is in serious condition Saturday night after an auto-pedestrian crash, and police said the man was thrown some distance after the impact.

The collision occurred in the area of 500 South and 900 West, and FOX 13 News first heard reports of the crash around 9:15 p.m.

Detective Richard Chipping, Salt Lake City Police Department, tells FOX 13 News a man was struck by a car and suffered critical injuries.

“We believe that he was in the crosswalk, and a vehicle that was traveling northbound struck the pedestrian,” he said. “The pedestrian was thrown quite a distance, it appears.”

Chipping said the man was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The investigation is underway, and Chipping said police are interviewing witnesses at the scene of the crash. He said it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. He said there was light rainfall at the time and that the victim was wearing dark clothing.

Chipping said this is another example of the importance of staying alert when on the road, whether in a car or on foot.

“We really, really want to get the message out to be cautious during this holiday period, we got dark nights, the weather is starting to change, and it’s going to be hard to see people,” he said. “We need people to be careful crossing the streets, and we need people driving to look out for pedestrians as well.”
